The UK government has outlined plans to become the “world’s first” net zero-aligned financial centre. In its revised green finance strategy - the first update since 2019 – the government said it would ensure market participants had “all the information and tools they needed” to align with its climate and nature goals. The new strategy is based on various tenets, including meeting global climate and environmental challenges; making green investments into the UK’s economy; and mobilising private investment. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the Bank of England (BoE) and the Financial Reporting Council are among entities which have welcomed the UK government’s launch of the revised strategy. The entities issued a joint statement acknowledging that managing the risks and opportunities associated with climate change was crucial to maintaining the resilience of the financial system, the integrity of UK markets, and ensuring a “smooth and effective” transition to net zero. “We welcome this updated Green Finance Strategy, which represents an important milestone, building on collective efforts to date and setting out a clear plan for the future,” said Nikhil Rathi, chief executive officer of the FCA. She He added: “We’re playing our part in delivering a world-leading framework for transition plan disclosures through our collaboration with the UK Transition Plan Taskforce.” The government recently committed £30 million to net zero projects with a focus on tackling the decarbonisation of highways infrastructure.
